Westport House

There has been a ‘big house’ on this site since the 1500’s, when Grace O’Malley, the famous Pirate Queen and Original Wild Atlantic Woman, built one of her castles here. Amazingly, her dungeons still remain in this magnificent Palladian mansion which was built in 1730 by her descendants, the Browne family. It is one of the few privately-owned historic houses left in Ireland and because it retains all of its original features, it feels like walking back in time to the 18th century.

Visitors are welcome to take a self-guided tour or a guided tour can be arranged to tell you the fascinating story behind this house. Consider taking Afternoon Tea after so you can truly experience the house as a Lord or Lady.

With a whole range of attractions available on this 400 acre estate, you’ll make memories to cherish at Westport House. Try milder to wilder adventure activities in this stunning parkland and lakeland heritage setting. Experience the thrill of a Bird of Prey landing on your arm in a private Hawk Walk or in one of our daily shows at the Birds of Prey Centre. You’ll have swash-buckling family fun in the Pirate Adventure Park with Ireland’s only log-flume ride as well as a bunch of slides, boats and trains suited to children under 12.
