Brú na Bóinne (Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth)
In the green, rolling countryside of Ireland’s Boyne Valley sit some of the most remarkable monuments in the world. They are the ancient Stone Age mounds: Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth and they were built around 3,200BC.
The monuments have been recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Newgrange was re-discovered in 1699 and has inspired, fascinated and impressed visitors ever since. It is internationally famous for its mid winter alignment. Knowth, although less well known that Newgrange is probably even more impressive. Half as big again as its sister monument, not only does Knowth have the two biggest passage tombs ever found, it also has the world’s largest collection of Neolithic art. Visitors don’t go inside the passages at Knowth but they can climb on top of the great cairn to get spectacular views. Visitors can drive directly to Dowth.
All access to Newgrange and Knowth is through Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre and by guided tour only. On-line booking is available and advisable. Groups of 14+ must pre-book by contacting the Visitor Centre. The Centre provides facilities such as tourist information, tearoom, picnic area and parking. The Visitor Centre is the starting point for all visits and a shuttle bus service runs to the monuments from the bus stop which is reached via a pedestrian bridge across the River Boyne. Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre and Newgrange are open all year round except for the Christmas period. Knowth is open from April 1st until November 1st inclusive.
